Manuel Miguel

Painter + Sculptor + Visual Creator

Born in Teococuilco de Marcos Pérez, a Zapotec village nestled high in the Sierra Madre of Oaxaca, Mexico, Manuel Miguel grew up surrounded by the silence of the mountains and the rhythm of rural life. His earliest creative gestures began as a child, drawing with a stick on rain-dampened trails while tending animals. Those quiet afternoons became the foundation of a lifelong dialogue with nature, memory, and imagination.

Deeply inspired by the engravings of José Guadalupe Posada, the 19th-century Mexican illustrator and printmaker best known for his satirical skeletons (calaveras) that captured the humor, politics, and social life of Mexico, Miguel began to see art as a way to narrate the everyday experience of his people. Over time, he developed a visual language that merges the fantastical and the organic, a world where human, animal, and myth coexist. His work draws from the landscapes of his youth, the traditions of his Zapotec heritage, and a profound respect for the land and its stories.

Manuel Miguel’s practice spans painting, sculpture in bronze, metal, and wood, ceramics, printmaking, and mixed media. This versatility reflects his belief that artistic creation is both a spiritual and social act. His pieces often evoke surreal and bucolic scenes that celebrate imperfection, spontaneity, and transformation, qualities that mirror the vitality of Oaxacan art and culture.

Throughout his career, Miguel has collaborated with renowned Oaxacan and national masters, most notably the late Alejandro Santiago, whose mentorship helped refine his sense of form and emotional depth. Since then, he has forged an independent path, exhibiting across Mexico and abroad in museums, galleries, and cultural centers.

Guided by authenticity and purpose, Manuel Miguel’s art remains a tribute to his roots — honest, dynamic, joyful, and visionary. His creations stand as both personal and collective chronicles, embodying the spirit of Oaxaca and its enduring dialogue with the world.
