Yvette Grutter
Mixed-Media Artist + Papermaker
Born in Mexico City, Yvette Grutter is a Mexican-Swiss-American artist based in Houston, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at San Antonio, with a major in Printmaking and a minor in Sculpture. Working from her studio at The Silos at Sawyer Yards, she explores the intersections of mixed-media painting, printmaking, and handmade paper.
Grutter’s sensitivity to materials and process reflects the layered influences of her multicultural heritage and international experiences. Her artistic practice has been shaped by residencies and cross-cultural exchanges, including a UNESCO-sponsored residency in Valencia, Spain. Through texture, color, and the transformative qualities of paper, her work explores memory, identity, nature, and personal experience.
In recognition of her contributions to the arts, the Government of Mexico named her a Cultural Ambassador during the VI Jornada de Artistas in 2025, honoring her commitment to promoting Mexican culture and traditions abroad.
For more than four decades, Grutter has shared her passion for art and her conviction in the importance of transmitting aesthetic values through her work and teaching. She has taught both adults and children, served as a mentor for the internship program at the University of Houston–Downtown, and continues to offer papermaking workshops throughout the year. Her work has been presented in the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, and Turkey, and is held in significant collections and featured in numerous publications.
